Emily Sterling

Associate Pastor

Q. How did you meet your best friend?

My longest best friend is Tess. We met when we were 11 years old and in 6th grade. We have been best friends ever since … 19 years. We went to middle school, high school, and undergraduate college together. She is like a sister to me.

Q. What was the last book you read?

A. I am usually reading more than 1 book at a time. I am currently reading The Shaping of Things to Come: Innovation and Mission for the 21st century church by Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch as well as a biography of Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. I love to read ministry books, novels, biographies, and memoirs.

Q. What do you enjoy most about being a pastor at Trinity UMC?
A. I love the people of Trinity. It is exciting to be in ministry with people who care about the church, who want to see people grow in the Christian faith, and who work to meet the needs of people in the community/world.

Q. When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A. Oh lots of things, but pastor was not one of them. I toyed with the idea of being a personal shopper, event planner, teacher, politician, lawyer, and speech writer. God called me to be a pastor and here I am. I like to think I use some of the skills from these other occupations as a pastor. You can figure out which skills. =)

Q. Are you a cat person, a dog person, both or neither?

A. Both. I have a beautiful part chocolate Labrador/part German short-haired pointer dog named Hazel Duke. She is a mess and I love her. I grew up with cats and my parents still have a cat.

Q. If you just won $1 million, what would you do with it?
A. Hmmm… good question. Give 10% to the church (right answer). Pay off bills/debt. Save/invest the majority. Give some away. Go on a trip(s).

Q. What skill or talent do you wish you had or were better at?
A. I wish I could play the piano. I wish I were a better singer. I wish I were fluent in Spanish.

Q. What was your first car? Where is it now?
A. My first car was a used 1999 white Toyota Corolla with manual door locks and windows. I had the car for 11 years and then traded it in when I bought the bright blue Ford Escape I have now. You can’t miss me driving around town. I apologize in advance if I cut you off in traffic.

Q. What is a fun tradition your family has?
A. My parents and I have a tradition of traveling during the week of Thanksgiving. We have spent Thanksgiving in New Bern, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; and on a cruise through the Panama Canal.
